National Training
Initiative for Injury and Violence Prevention
The National Association of Injury Control Research Centers (NAICRC) and the
State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association (STIPDA), have
joined together to address the need for training in the field.
Preventing Violence
through Education, Networking and Technical assistance (PREVENT) is a
component of the
National Training Initiative
for Injury and Violence Prevention.
Archived
multimedia seminars on a variety of topics from the University of
Pittsburgh Center for Injury
Research and Control. These seminars were part of the series entitled "The
Science and Practice of Injury Control" presented as part of a Fall
2000, Injury Epidemiology Seminar.
- A basic lecture on Injury
epidemiology is presented as part of the Global Health network series of public health Internet lectures. This site also
contains a follow-up lecture on Injury
Epidemiology Analytical Approaches along with other
topics being added on a continuing basis.
- VINCENT (Violence
and INjury Control
Education through Networking
and Training). This site contains the material from
the videoconference, "Getting Started in Injury Control and Violence Prevention"
presented in a web-based format that both expands upon and supplements the televised
program. CEU's are available. Vincent is organized by the University
of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center.
Systematic
Reviews of Childhood Injury Prevention Interventions - The aim of this project,
conducted by the Harborview Injury
Prevention Research Center at the University of Washington, is to provide information
to a wide variety of users on what works and what doesnt work for the prevention of
injuries to children and adolescents. Topics include: Adolescent suicide, Bicycles, Child
Abuse, Child Pedestrians, Choking, aspiration, and suffocation, Drowning, Falls,
Firearms, Fires and Burns, Poisoning, Recreational Injuries and Youth Violence.
- Teaching
a Web based Injury Control Course (by Phil Graitcer, Emory University -
Real Audio Format). Emory also lists a syllabus
for their introductory course, EOH580.
- The
Role of the Physician in Injury Control - This web-based continuing
education course is for all health care professionals. Its goal is to arm
participants with injury control theory, and empower them to take an active
part in professional and community efforts to prevent injuries or improve
patient outcomes for specific types of injuries. The nine interactive modules
of the course will take participants about two hours to complete, and grants
continuing education for this valuable knowledge.

On-Line Journal Club - This journal club provides an opportunity for the
practicing professional to receive continuing education credit for
participating in an on-line discussion of a scientific article recently
published in a mainstream occupational safety and health journal. The purpose
of the journal club is to discuss the selected article highlighting important
aspects, discussing weaknesses, and placing the results in perspective with
respect to the other literature and the experience of the participants.

Injuries Group -Preparing, maintaining and promoting the accessibility of
systematic reviews in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic
injury.
- What works in public health? The
Guide to Community
Preventive Services (Community Guide) tries to answer the question which
deals with community or "population based interventions such as
Motor
Vehicle Occupant Injury.
- Reducing the Burden of
Injury: Advancing Prevention and Treatment - A 1999 report from the
Institute of Medicine that makes recommendations intended to further develop
the field of injury prevention and control and to reduce the burden of
injury in America.

variety of specific types of injuries are available at the CDC's National
Center for Injury Prevention and Control site.
- Health Promotion Programs for Injury Prevention
- A database (Australian Injury Prevention Program Database) of programs
produced by the University of
Queensland's Department
of Social and Preventive Medicine, with initial funding from Queensland
Health.
- Safe USA is a working
alliance of major public and private partners dedicated to reducing
significantly the high rates of injuries and deaths related to injuries in
the United States and increasing the levels of safety in the nations
homes, schools, work sites, transportation areas, and communities.
Safe Within - An
exemplary web site, Safe Within provides news and information relating to family
safety and security. It contains various news groups, drawings, "Today's Safety News", "Top
Tips", hyperlinked Resource lists, a listserv, and more.
- FACE, (Facing Alcohol Concerns through
Education) is a seven year old, privately funded, national media, training, and advocacy
project on alcohol issues based in Clare, Michigan.
- Teen Safety on the Information
Highway, one school district's approach.
- Children's Safety Network
(CSN), National
Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center - CSN provides resources and technical
assistance to maternal and child health agencies and other organizations seeking to reduce
unintentional injuries and violence to children and adolescents. They are one of six
Children's Safety Network Resource Centers
funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the U. S. Department of Health and Human
Services.
- Think First's missions is to prevent
brain and spinal cord injuries through the education of individuals, community leaders and
the creators of public policy.
- Home and Family
Safety Sponsored by the Virtual Hospital at the
University of Iowa.
- The Burn and Shock Trauma Institute of Loyola University Chicago sponsors educational
material at their Injury Prevention
Program homepage.
